Video to green screen

Remove the background from a video of a person. Get it back on a clean green screen, ready to key in any editor.

A video frame of a woman in a checked jacket in front of a street, and the same frame with the street replaced by a flat green screen.
Before and after. One frame from a video, cut out here.

What this does

This removes the background from a video of a person and replaces it with flat chroma green (#00B140), or chroma blue (#0047BB), so the clip keys like footage shot in a studio. Drop in an MP4, MOV or WebM and download an MP4 with the person cut out of every frame, the original sound kept and no watermark. It is rotoscoping without the afternoon of masking: a portrait matting model (MODNet) draws a soft-edged matte around hair, hands and shoulders on each frame, and a light pass between frames steadies the edge. The result is an H.264 MP4 at up to 1080p that opens in Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, CapCut, iMovie and OBS. All of it runs in your browser. The video is never uploaded and there is no account to make.

How to turn a video into a green screen

  1. 01

    Open the video

Drop in an MP4, MOV or WebM of a person, up to five minutes long. Your browser reads it directly. Nothing is sent to a server.

  2. 02

    Check the cut-out

Pause or scrub to any frame and the preview shows the person on green. Switch to blue if they are wearing green.

  3. 03

    Make it and download

Every frame is cut out in turn and saved as an MP4 at up to 1080p, with the original sound. Key out the green in your editor and put any background behind them.

Questions

How do I remove the background from a video for free?

Open the video on this page, check the preview, then make the green screen. You get an MP4 of the person on flat green, with no watermark and no sign-up. Key out the green in any editor and the original background is gone, ready for whatever you put behind them.

Is it free, with no watermark?

Yes. There is no watermark, no account and no cap on how many videos you convert. It runs on your own machine, so there is no server cost to pass on.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is decoded, cut out and encoded again inside your browser. The only thing downloaded is the cut-out model itself, once, from this site.

How do I key out the green in my editor?

Put the green screen clip on the track above your new background, apply the editor's chroma key and pick the green. In Premiere Pro it is Ultra Key, under Video Effects, Keying. In Final Cut Pro it is the Keyer effect. In DaVinci Resolve, use the 3D Keyer effect on the Edit page or the Delta Keyer in Fusion. In CapCut, select the clip and turn on Chroma key. In iMovie, set the video overlay to Green/Blue Screen. In OBS, add a Chroma Key filter to the source.

What footage does it work on?

People. The model is trained on portraits, so talking heads, presenters and full-body shots come out cleanly, and a clear gap between the person and the background helps. Objects held away from the body, pets and products on their own are less reliable. Everyone in the shot is kept, not just the main subject.

What are the hex codes for chroma green and blue?

The green is #00B140, which is RGB 0, 177, 64. The blue is #0047BB, which is RGB 0, 71, 187. Both are flat across the whole frame, so a keyer picks them up in one click.

When should I choose blue?

When the person is wearing green or holding something green. A keyer removes anything close to the backdrop colour, so a green shirt on a green screen disappears with it. On blue it stays.

Why green rather than a transparent video?

Every editor, streaming app and phone editor can key green. Transparent video is supported in far fewer places, and a green MP4 is small, plays everywhere and can be checked by eye before you key it.

How long does it take?

It depends on the length of the video and your machine. Chrome and Edge run the model on your graphics card. Browsers without that fall back to the processor, which is much slower, and the page says when that happens. The time left is shown while it works. Keep the tab open until it finishes.

Is there a length or size limit?

Five minutes per video, and the output is capped at 1080 pixels on the short side, so 4K footage comes back as 1080p. For a longer piece, cut it into sections and convert each one.
